The existing screws are not stock items, Fender only use 6-32 screws for single coil pickups.

Is it possible that the neck pickup is not original? Looking at the OPs other posts the pickguard on the black HSS American Special is not original so other parts could have been changed.

That’s what I’m thinking. There’s something else going on if you can’t adjust pickup height properly with a stock setup.

It is certainly possible that the screws were not stock since I bought the guitar used. I assumed they were original, but could be wrong. AntStrat generously sent me a couple of screws that should work and I will give them a try. Thanks AntStrat! And thanks to others who contributed to this thread.

The pickguard my black HSS American Special Stratocaster came with was aged white pearloid (not stock) and I switched it out to tortoise. All of the electronics look to be stock. The guitar I have been discussing in this thread is an American Special Telecaster that appears to be all stock, including the pickguard, although the neck pickup screws might not be. The neck pickup on the Tele certainly looks like a stock Texas Special -white, yellow, black leads and measures 9.5K at 68 degrees. But why would someone just replace the screws? Is it possible Fender ran out of 3/4" ones when they made this guitar and had to substitute slightly shorter ones?

And the people that work in any Ace I've been in know where everything is too. Unlike the 12 year old girl in the orange vest at Home Depot.
Their prices are a tad (or more) higher, but you do get first rate customer service.

12 year old girls at your big orange box, eh? EEK3.gif

Telecaster neck pickup does make a difference.
Would've saved a lot of head scratching if you'd mentioned that earlier.
Fender use SCREW M 4-40 5/8" RHP STL CHROME on the American Special Telecaster which translates to machine screw #4-40 round head Phillips.
