Hi everyone, today I found a Silverface Twin Reverb with master volume control in a local music store. I could get it for around $750 cash, and it's in good condition and has just been gone through by a tech. What do you think? Should I get it?

Non-master volumes go for $500 to 600 every day. He is asking a bit much.

$750 is about what they run in my area. I don't think that's too bad considering it was about $200 to go all the way through my Quad Reverb when I had it freshened up.

Yeah it's in pretty good condition, and plus these don't come up in my area much. This music store also has a BFSR, a BF Bandmaster, a TV front Princeton, a narrow panel Princeton, an old Champion 600 and.. Drumroll... A '52 Bassman

$750 seems in the ballpark, at least for my area. I've seen some go for significantly lower, but those usually needed quite a bit of work before I'd really trust them to drag to a gig. The thing is, there are a lot of good amps out there, including vintage Silverface Fenders, for less than that. You have to ask yourself whether a Master Volume Twin Reverb is really what you want in a tube amp, especially if it's one of the 77+ ultralinear, 135-watt ones. They are awesome amps, but they're also extremely loud, extremely clean, and pretty damn heavy. If you're playing in a jazz or latin setting where you need clean headroom to compete with electric pianos, horns, percussion etc, there's pretty much two amps for that job - Silverface MV Twin or Roland JC-120. For rock, it'll be good with pedals but don't expect to crank it until the output tubes distort - it's way too clean and loud.

If you want something that will break up a bit easier, be on the lookout for early-70s Silverface Bassmans and Bandmasters. I see them go for chump change all the time. You could get one of those and a nice Avatar 1X12 or 2X12 speaker cab for around $750 and it would be a bit easier to cart around to gigs.

I had that amp in college. You could get one cheap then. Great clean sound. But trust me, that are lousy if you live in an apartment. The manager shows up long before the sweet spot.
