Part of being a mechanic of any kind is sometimes making the tools.
46 years or working on cars this year and if I would have patented the countless tools I designed and made I would probably be giving Snap-On a run for their money by now...or bought out by them.

Yep and yep. Former mechanic here, lifelong tinkerer. I probably got lucky this time, but yeah- something about that pic said "this is a tool in the making".

Well, anybody can see it’s a modified Fremson fixture, although the use of the asymmetrical barging spring could be confusing to some. It should work great for it’s intended purpose, as long as you remember to keep the Carling off-set constant through the whole process, otherwise you risk perfoloning the master ribs, but that can be overcome in the final coralization with the proper set-up, unless you want to just do it manually. Either way, nice tool!

Its a Turbo encabulator. Everybody knows that. It automatically synchronizes the Cardinal grammeter.

What'd you use to make it? A notched straight edge from Neck Check?
I taped the nail file to my work bench and used it to start the notch. Once I got the notch depth I used that as a guide for my precision router and widened the first notch then cut the other three on a fret rocker.
Next was to cut the file into pieces that will fit into the slots and epoxy them in place (the step I am on now). Finally, I will file the sharp edges off of the cut pieces of nail file so I don't damage a guitar or my fingers.
If Stewmac was making these by hand every time,I could see why they would charge over $100a piece. Having them manufactured in bulk then charging the same price I think is a bit ridiculous unless they are getting charged $30 to $40s piece themselves and have to cover their own overhead. I'm not seeing that as these are petty small. They just have the patent so they have the market cornered for a while.

I admire people who can machine useful things.
I suppose a messy equivalent make-shift tool (for those of us who don't have the tools or know-how, and don't want to invest so much) could be fashioned by tightly wrapping some Wet & Dry around a straight edge, and then to each side of that, taping two similar pieces of paper with the non-abrasive side out?

Nice. Where'd the material come from? Does Neck Check sell a fret checker like that? And then you machined the places for the file?

Yes, that fret rocker is from Neck Check. If memory serves me, I bought it from them about 7 years ago on evilBay. The earlier this week I got a set of 6 diamond nail files from Scamazon.
I don't know if you could really consider what I did machining, though. There really wasnt any real measuring other than to set it all by eye. If you want more info on it PM me and I don't mind giving you some tips on how to make one.
