I've had bone pain and I have had root canal. I'll take the root canal anytime.
I believe it. My best friend had Sickle Cell Disease. I spent countless hours hanging out with him in hospital rooms after he'd get admitted during a pain crisis. Just knowing what he went through...its something I'd never want to experience. Only IM(intramuscular?) Morphine and Dilaudid injections would would even touch it.

He passed away in 2006 @ 28 yrs old. I miss him dearly.

When I was in the hospital the first time for my knee, they couldn't do the surgery for 2 1/2 days because they needed to wait for the swelling in the bone to subside. they had me on a morphine pump for the first day and finally realized that it wasn't strong enough to stop the pain I was in. Then they changed it out with Dilaudid. I could hit the button as I needed but it would only give me a shot every so often. I can say that that stuff is sinful. It definitely killed the pain but it also killed my consciousness.
One time, I was talking to my girlfriend, now wife, and she told me to just take a shot of it. I didn't want to because I really liked being there with her but ended up tapping out and hitting the button. Afterward, I was talking to her about something and she started laughing at me. When I asked her what was so funny she told me that I had started the sentence a little over a half hour earlier. I had started to say something and fell asleep mid-sentence and then woke up and finished completely oblivious to the fact that I fell out.
As for bone pain being as rough as @Bowmap states, this is a 3D rendering of where my leg was broken.

You can see where the break goes straight down the side of the tibia. My knee was about the size of a soccer ball too.
