i'm instituting a new thing where a day will be
dedicated to going back into the archives to do
some listening; it will be henceforth known as
Fall Back Friday.
And what better way to start off the new thing
than with
The New Thing, a collab with @alainvey:

Notably, this was the beginning of a series of albums
we made
together.
On this one i'm mostly playing the bass parts, using a
Danelectro baritone guitar.
i think it actually still holds up quite well.

Scrapple From The Apple (v11)

A couple of days off from playing the head and it's almost like
i'm having to start work all over just to get back to where i was
tempo-wise...
but i think the solo was decent.

Thanks so much!
Here's another one:
Almost There

One of my recording engineering teachers once made the comment that some recordings were like an artist oil painting...take your time, re-paint, it takes a long time to dry.

He also said sometimes you need to make music like watercolors...you do them and there's no changing brushstrokes... think sumi-e for example.

Your stuff is a batch of wonderful watercolors...and with a lot of layers of musicality.

What a beautiful way to describe what she lays down.

Having another go at this lovely standard:
Just Friends (v2)

Bridget, plus a Timmy and an old DM-2 analog delay pedal...
same as on the last take, but i got the tone dialed in a bit more to my liking.
It wasn't bad before, of course... ;)

For Fall Back Friday this week, i'm listening to this:
Empire Star

Empire Star was among the first concept/theme albums i recorded,
with the music being inspired by Samuel Delany's eponymous
novella.

i was still using the baritone guitar for some of the bass parts,
but had also acquired a nice MIJ P-Bass and transitioned from the

'modern primitive' recording process of guitar/looper/amp captured
live in the room with a standalone
stereo mp3 recorder to the Scarlett
2i2 audio interface and laptop setup.

As for the music, i think this was also the beginning of me finding my own personal voice, and so it has a very special meaning for me.
i think it holds up rather well in any case.
