I think I should start looking for someone to put new frets on this, there aren’t too many around here. I want stainless on it!

It’s still playable, but I had to raise the action a bit. I contacted a local guy, I wasn’t sure if he still did re-frets, but he does. He did work for some fairly big names, including James Burton. I’m to schedule the re-fret in 2-3 weeks.

I think you'll like having stainless. I love my stainless frets. And I'd rather work with a hard material than nickel-silver in general. I have zero issue with any tonal difference. That is partly because the 3 instruments I refretted with stainless had frets that were so worn down that they went from nearly unplayable and unmusical to completely revitalized and clear sounding.

I think I can see just the tiniest bit of wear on my main guitar after almost 3 years. I've never had nickel-silver frets make it more than a few months without having really noticeable wear. I bend all over the fretboard and I play pretty hard when I start getting really excited.

You don’t need a refret here, you just need a proper level, recrown and polish of the frets.
They look taller on the photo. There’s about 0.9mm left around the 12th fret, and they’re very flat. Would that be enough for a level and recrown?

.9 mm is about .035”,….that is pretty low. They look tall enough in the pictures but it’s a judgement call. Can you still bend the string at the 12th fret without the string slipping under your finger?

I can, but I’m starting to feel like it’s wanting to slip. Had to raise the action the other day to stop buzzing. The frets above 16 are less worn.

Any ideas yet on the fret size you're going for? I had bigger SS frets installed - 6105 I believe - on my 78. Zero issues, but the poly running up the original frets was a PIA. Like the previous poster, the originals were super low after a few fret dressings and the new frets made it so much nicer to play.

I figured I’d go with what’s already on there now. I’d assume it’s something like 6230. The guitar is a 1979 Greco.
