It felt great but at $850 it was just too much $$$. Cosmetically it had lots of issues but at $600 I would have jumped.

I'm right there with you, but these SQ models really are set apart from the rest of Squier land. Even with all the cosmetic issues I held it for about 20 minutes before deciding against it, and as I said I'd have paid $600 for it. It played and sounded that good no matter what the headstock says.

850 bucks might get you a Fender Vintera 70 or Classic series 70 which are a step up IMO unless the SQ is the highest model and even then they would be on par

Squier is the Fender version of 'putting lipstick on a pig'.
I disagree. I think Fender and Gibson (with Epiphone) have learned that lower-cost guitars sell in greater abundance than higher-end axes, and have put a lot of time, effort and money into building up their "little brother/sister" brands.

I recently picked up a 40th Anniversary Gold Edition Squier Telecaster, and I'll stack it up against any other Tele in my collection (I have five). Bound neck, gold hardware, anodize pickguard, custom Fender-designed alnico single-coil Tele pickups, and a dreamy neck with great action, perfect intonation, and sparkling looks. What's not to like? And I paid "open box" pricing for a perfect specimen. Can't ask for more!

I would probably pay $850 for that MIJ it's a beauty to me. Where is it?

With GOOD Squires I enjoy them about 95% as much as a $2000 MIA but can have NGD 10 times as often. That math works better for me.

Guessing you haven't picked up a decent Squier in the last 20 years.
The problem is the price of these second brands especially Squier, LTD and Ibanez Premium have soared to the roof that it makes more sense to go straight to the real thing. With 600 dollars you can get a used MIM made in 2010s in full body thickness.

Yeah you can dress it up with boo-teek pickups, Callaham bridges, locking tuners etc., but in the end it is a cheapo.

Plus the last 10 years have been inundated with more respectable fakes under Japanese brands made in China, more commonly Tokai and Bacchus. There is also FGN that is a more affordable alternative to Fender Japan.

What would you expect from a guitar made by Fujigen Gakki?

I expect an excellent guitar and that is what you get with an SQ serial # Squier made by Fujigen Gakki in 1983-84.
Odd that you would post that with your user name...
