If tone is in the fingers then maybe weight is in the head?

I have a Peavey Renown 400 for about 37 years. It doesn't get out much any more (Never) I carried it up to my attic studio 3 years ago and thought.... That's it. It's never moving again it's too heavy.

I also have a Marshall 1936 2 x 12 cab which I think nothing (or almost nothing) of bringing up and down.

Everything else is much lighter. H&K head. Laney Super Cub 12. Roland Street Cube.

Yesterday I sold my Bandit red stripe as it's not being used. Got my money back on it.

So I decided to move things round to make a bit of space.

If you asked me to guess I'd have said the Renown was about 40KG and the Cab was 22ish

It turns out that the Peavey is only 29KG  and the cab is 24.5KG

The Bandit is 20KG and feels like a feather.

So i picked up the renown for a set of single arm rows. Turns out it's not that heavy. Just awkward to carry up and down stairs. Ah well...

After owning heavy amps for decades (including Fender Twin) I decided that weight is in both the head and the back 😇

So understanding that it's just not necessary to own heavy amps post year 2000 I bought a Mesa TA-15 - weighs 5.5 kg and a Mesa Mark V 25 - weighs 7 kg.
Then got a custom 1x12 cab that weighs 8 kg.

These modern light weight amps also sound better than the old beasts :thumb:

I have a memory of struggling up to the top floor of a Georgian house with a Twin Reverb 40 years ago. But when I look it's also only 29KG

I have a messed up back. My new max I've set for myself is 50 lbs. If it's heavier than that I'm selling it. Already got rid of most of my huge stuff and now I'm down to a Peavey KB60 and a Peavey 1 x 15" bass cabinet with a horn. I'd guess both are around 60 lbs. Gonna sell the 1 x 15" soon.

Already sold my boat anchor guitars and my heavy amps after a bad experience about ten years ago (ended up on my back for a week).

This cabinet has been my main squeeze, since about 1974. It has been the key to most of my sounds, feedabacks, screechin's & squawkin's for all that time. Original '72, Pulsonic Greenbacks and gloriously broken in! 1x12s and 2x12s just don't do the due, even in pairs. And there is always someone willing to share half of that 80 pounds with me, as they know that sound and what it means! FWIW, it looked almost new when I got it! ;) The amps on top have changed and are now an SV20H (with a @johnh M2 attenuator) and just the Lexicon for delay and verb!

Tone is subjective, elusive, multifaceted.

Weight is measurably objective.
But relative...as measured in maneuverability.

A 65 pound mass that one can carry with the arm fully extended is going to manifest as "easier" than a 40 pound mass which requires one to bend their arm.

Until I learned* to carry my Super Reverb by hugging it to my chest, it was an awkward bastard to move around because it was just tall enough to require me to bend my arm...or it would be banging against my ankle with every step.

*watched a roadie pick it up and carry it like that and never looked back...game changer it was!

I never went anywhere without a roadie after that.

really guys - it's just sooooo unnecessary to be owning heavy old amps these days. This 12 pounder sounds better anyway and is x100 more versatile :)

I think there is a weight to age ratio. As I age, things seem to be getting heavier……including myself.

I switched to head and cabinet for Bass in an effort to split up the weight. May do the same with guitar. Something like the Helix is starting to become intriguing as well.

yeah.... but...isn't that a "solid state"..?.. I mean it does Not use tubes does it,..?... and you like the sound....?

I was under the impression that solid states as a rule are a bit lighter than the old tube amps...those Renowns came out in the 80's correct?.. so have you had it since t was new?..

if you don't mind me asking ... do you remember what you paid for it?.. I see some selling for as low as $249.00 today.. One is even on Etsy..
