I think I’ll quit playing now…

Keep playing. Develop your own technique and style.

Remember:
Clapton couldn't play like Townsend and vis-versa.
Page couldn't play like Hendrix and vis-versa.
and no-one could play like Beck!

I was at a Tommy Emmanuel concert at the Napa Opera House 15+ years ago, when, half way through his performance, Tommy said, "Do we have any guitar players in the audience?" I leaned over to the guy next to me and said (quietly, I thought), "Not any more!" Tommy said, while laughing, "Some guy over here, (gesturing in my general direction), "said, 'Not any more!'." Good ears, Tommy!

I'll never understand that sentiment. Things like that only inspire me to KEEP playing and learning. Someone being better than me, no matter how much better, wont ever make me want to quit or even use the expression.

All I can say is don't let someone else determine whether or not you play. No matter how great they are.

Yingyang Milkshake has been doing that since '83, without the terrible Toby Keith vibrato like that guy.

I just heard a song he released last year that was his version of this Swedish Christmas song and, from my untrained ear, I couldn't hear the connection. It's all the usual sweep picking and fretboard wanking from what I heard of it.

After seeing people that can play like this…

Shreds with great restraint, well maybe not.

I don’t worry about shredding anymore. By the time I had the main part of Yngwie’s Trilogy Suite I learned, finally that it didn’t matter as I still don’t sound like Yngwie and started using speed sparingly, in short bursts, and trying to develop my own style.

I am getting to the point where I have a melody running through my head, and am just getting to the point that I can play what I am hearing in my head.

I would like to see that shredder guy cut heads with a guy like May, or Gillis. Speed is great when it’s not the only tool in the box.

Yeah, exactly. All tge players you mention were once as good as you and me. Thing is, in my case, it was when they were maybe eight or nine😀😀

Ok, driving your car enjoying the sun and the surrounding, the trip to a good place to enjoy life.
You don't care about the race driver running in circles at blistering speed on a race track.
Play your guitar and enjoy, the best way is never give up playing and learning.
But fun is the biggest part in guitar playing.
You have it good you can play guitar.

Life is good,
Robin

Same! Derek Trucks was playing gigs after ONE YEAR. I think he got his SG when he was 10 or 11. Born in '79 and started learning in 1990.

I'm 3 years in and I couldn't imagine trying to play a gig right now lol. I mean, I'm sure I could learn a few songs to limp my way through a specific set list but as I sit now? Nah. I don't know a whole song of anything.
