I hate sounding negative, but there are some things people do on guitar that I don't get or simply don't like. My 2 biggest cringes are...

Percussive acoustic style. This irritates me to death, hearing someone thumping and whacking away on the instrument. Even as a drummer I find it chaotic and annoying.

Sweep picking/arpeggios. This sounds like something you do to check intonation, only really fast. It doesn't sound good or even remotely musical to me. Nothing ruins a good solo like sweep picking.

I'm sure some will disagree, and still others will hate things that I think are awesome, lol. But I like hearing other people's opinions.

This thread reminds me of a joke.
A guy approached a man on the street and says, I'll give you $50K, no questions. The caveat is I'll give your most hated enemy $100K. Would you accept?
The guy says, "Sure, why would I refuse $150K?".

If the link isn't obvious, it's that some of the most disliked techniques are often our own.

I still like sweep picking though. In fact I can't think of anything other than thumping your acoustic that would bother me.

This times 1000.

This and the guy who relies on a loop pedal where every song devolves into him starting out by making a percussion loop by banging on his guitar then spending the next 10 minutes with masturbating guitar solos over the top of his 4 bar loop.

Although I have rarely heard some of the "percussive acoustic style" done well, for the most part I am not enthralled by the sound.

I am open to the use of most of the flashy guitar "tricks" as long as it's done tastefully and fits the music.

My pet peeve is a guitar solo that comes out of nowhere and does not fit the arrangement, as if the guitar player just wants to show off and has no care for how his part fits the song.

I'm also not fond of the scooped metal tone either.

I'm not really into fingerboard tapping either. When Eddie V. H. did it back in the late 70s it was exciting, he excelled at it. Then it seemed like every metal guitarist jumped on the bandwagon. It just became a case of "hey, look how good I am" YAWN.
I can do it, ( not brilliantly though) but I prefer not to.

I’m not a huge fan of the 2 handed tapping stuff like Polyphia, Sarah Longfield and Tobin Abassi it sounds like Nintendo.
You know, there may be something to that. Video game soundtracks are "a thing" now. Some of them even get full orchestrations. It's probable some of these players were influenced by the music from their favorite games.

Is Tommy Emmanuel in that category?

I love him.

I don’t like shredding, but I like Steve Vai quite a bit. Wonderful player. He’s got such a wonderful sense of melody that I love in guitar playing.
