At the risk of poking my nose into something I shouldn’t…
I have been playing with the ashtray on my Strat in place for 30 years…move your hand a centimeter or so towards the neck and you’ll still be muting just like before.
On a related note, I’ve heard a lot of people bring that question up…even before I got my Strat (and the two Teles with ashtrays in place as well), I never muted directly over the saddles/bridge.
Just my experience…sorry to intrude.

Yeah just sprayed, figured if it wears badly ill just powder coat it at a later date...

Well right, we do not all play the same, but it seems like more players rest the palm on the saddles to vary muting in a way you cannot do further up past the saddles which is more on / off than continuous slight muting.
Same as Strats with trems, some use it some dont!
Since @JMCUK is a new member I cannot assume much in terms if experience, where you I know to be an experienced player.

That’s true—my fingerpicking technique lends itself to a totally different way of muting, but even before adopting this technique, I always steered clear of the bridge to avoid the ol’ “hand mangle” on the side and heel of my palm.
Ultimately, everybody has to figure out what works for them…

Let's clear this one up.....!
Over the last 30yrs I've always had a guitar in the house, and I can get about the neck just fine, however I've never fully committed or consistently put the time in (as in I'd play for 3 or 4 months, but then not pick it up for 2 yrs)
In the presence of skilled guitarists I'd say I currently sit just below intermediate, and whilst I've recently been putting in around 2hrs a day (and my repertoire has increased more in the last month than 30yrs
) I'm nowhere near as good as I should be after that amount of time (hoping to change that now).Either way you were right to question my ashtray design Mr Butcher as I was definitely basing it more on form over function....can't help that though....I do and always will find guitars beautiful objects to just look at regardless of anything else and over the coming years will get as much out of customising them, as playing them....I just love making stuff/ creating things too
