As the lead guitarist in Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974, Bob Welch served as the transition from their humbly skilled blues rock sound, to the pop rock/soft rock sound of their albums Rumours and Tusk. Welch was also the first American member to join Fleetwood Mac, having been born in California but spending much of his adult life in Paris. Some rare photos show Welch playing a pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster, in a sunburst finish with a maple neck.

I am not sure as to the exact manufacture of this Strat, though it looks to be either a late 59 Strat, or a 1961 or 1962 Fender Stratocaster. On most of the Future Games album, Bob Welch played a Gibson ES 345, a Telecaster and a Fender Strat. You can hear it on the tracks Dragonfly, Sands Of Time and Future Games.

Bob Welch also played a Gibson RD, as well as a Strat and a sunburst Les Paul on the Paris albums. His amps were largely Fender and Orange amps, but by the time Danny Kirwan was fired, Bob Welch started using Marshall and Ampeg amps, as well as a Roland Space Echo and Morley pedals.

Most of Bob Welch's guitars wound up in the possession of Gruhn Guitars in the 2000s, and I believe that that Strat may have been one of those guitars he took to Gruhn.

A lot of guitarists in Fleetwood Mac played Strats. I believe Danny Kirwan played a Strat on some albums, and I also know that Peter Green played a Strat on the studio version of Albatross.

It is also pretty cantankerous that Bob Welch was never properly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a Fleetwood Mac member. But I care more about the music Bob Welch created as a Fleetwood Mac member rather than some silly Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction.

But if you guys like Bob Welch's pre-CBS sunburst Strat please let me know.

Future games is a great song. Had the album when it first came out.

I'd say it is. The second photo posted is the one where I think I can see the curve of the lower part of the headstock... indicating the larger headstock.

Looks like it might have the large 'with synchronised tremolo' text too so a '68 or '69 most likely but possibly anywhere up to '71. A date for the first posted images might narrow that down somewhat.

That might be the Strat that FM used as a "pass-around" instrument...they had one that really belonged to the band, no one in particular, that was used by Peter, Danny, Jeremy, and possibly Bob as well on various recordings. However, I don't recall that Strat having a humbucker installed between neck and middle pup positions. Maybe that was something Bob did during his tenure?
