Exactly right. After adding a non standard pickguard and having decked the trem, the setup needs to be adjusted.
As previously mentioned, the action is currently fine. I need to adjust the neck angle to raise the bridge saddles and keep the action as good as it is now, to give me needed space...
Yup. The action with the current neck height, neck angle and bridge saddles is fine, but I don't like the small clearance between the strings and the pickguard. I have a standard pickguard to put on the guitar, which gives me about 1/16" more clearance, but I think that's still not enough. My...
Exactly. I'm preparing to adjust all that, so I figured I'd ask around as to the range of preferences. At this point, I know I don't like the small clearance I have now.
PossumK, so you like less space between strings and pickguard?
On my 77, the pickups are almost flush with the pickguard, and I still tend to hit the pickguard with the pick more often than any of my other instruments.
I used a digital caliper to measure from the top of the D string to the top of the pickguard, just in front of the bridge, then subtracted the thickness of the D string.
Interested to know how other folks have their strats set up with regards to height of the strings over the pickguard (or body on a strat without a pickguard).
My number one strat is a 1977 Fender with a decked original bridge and a self made pickguard that is somewhat thicker than a stock...
I've noticed some sellers of vintage trem arm springs include a "shot" or bearing like ball that apparently prevents the spring end from galling or eating into the bottom of the arm hole on the bridge.
1. Did these come stock on strats during any particular period?
2. Are they really...
As I suspected would happen. I'm thinking might be better to wear out the arm threads before the bridge/block.
While my original loaded pickguard are gone I'm still thinking to preserve whatever original parts are left.
OP here. For now, I'm going to get a new trem bar. I might decide later to replace the whole assembly, but I would like to have a bar that fits the original.
I still find it odd that the threads on the original bar stripped before the thread.
I'm trying to decide if a Fender made bar, or if a...
Actually, not so many years of use. When it was still nearly new, another player asked to check it out; I asked him to be gentle with the trem, but everyone wants be be Jimi Hendrix.
Since I've gone 40+ years with it decked as a hardtail, I've been satisfied with it as a hardtail. I have...
"The funny thing is that the ‘70s bridges were a hybrid era. It’s vintage (2 7/32”) mounting screw spacing but modern/narrow saddle spacing (2 1/16”)."
Interesting, given me lots to think about. I had long assumed it was wide/wide like the vintage bridge, so I measured this bridge and the...
"You were really lucky that it works now, but I wouldn’t tempt fate."
Good point, 3bolt79. Because the trem block threads weren't the issue, I may have been lulled into thinking those threads are more robust than they are.
My partscaster is setup with the trem floating. I've been fine all this...
Hi, all. I have a 77 Stratocaster that I bought new. I know folks like to bag on 70s strats, and while mine is not without faults, it plays and sounds great (non-original pickups).
Within the first year of ownership, the trem arm hole threads became stripped out. Whenever someone asked to try...
