Newb - HSS wiring questions - A new twist

A: I really need to know how you folks create these graphics. I used Illustrator and it was a pain in the butt. I'm going snowboarding for a week so I'll have plenty of time to try to understand this stuff while away. Would it be easier if I just built a new strat with dedicated tone knobs - 1...

Newb - HSS wiring questions - A new twist

Argh, you are correct. I was myopic and only thinking about the Gimour mod signal and not the ramifications of it. I am going snowboarding for a week so I'll have plenty of time to read and maybe understand some of this stuff better.

Newb - HSS wiring questions - A new twist

I've updated the drawing to correct the issues noted by StratUp. Current config of wiring: Would doing this allow the T1 and T2 controls to remain completely independent? Would adding the wire to the T1 from the Gilmour switch enable tone on Neck pickup? If these seem like very...

Newb - HSS wiring questions - A new twist

“The unused end of the volume pot needs to be grounded to the case.” It is, I neglected to include in my drawing. My mistake. “The kill switch should run from a C terminal to ground to take all signals to ground. Alternatively, it could be from the hot inbound volume pot lug to ground. Then it...

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

You sail BLO is polymerized; it is not. There is linseed oil. There is polymerized linseed oil (the thick stuff that gets gooey) Then there is BLO which uses petroleum distillates to harden. Polymerized linseed oil and BLO are different products.

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

Thanks. High school me would be pleased with my guitar. 52 year old me is pretty happy with it, too. Beauty of an inlay; I’ve never done that sort of thing, and, I’ve not used that wood. My typical species are poplar, white and red oak, soft and hard maple, walnut, rosewood, teak, and Ipe...

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

Pictures as promised. The quality of the body finish is meh since I intend to build one from scratch. The neck is still acclimating. Action is still a touch higher than I’d like, but more than acceptable. I’m not disappointed in the quality my fret finish, not that it’s special but I’m pleased.

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

You ain’t lying. I was born into a woodworking family. I wanted a guitar kit as a gateway drug into building one completely from scratch; the get the courage to built six string fretless bass.

Full gloss finish on Maple, yes. Full gloss finish on Rosewood is looking for trouble. Rosewood is oily. Frequently, if you apply an oil based varnish to rosewood it may never try. The oils in the wood react with the oil finish and its a mess. I built a high gloss teak vanity a few years back...

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

Admittedly, I am a nut about functional details. It is my nature; I want all tools and equipment I use to be in perfect working order so I become the weakest link, not the tool.

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

Respectfully, you are wrong. There is linseed oil that takes forever to cure, if it ever truly does. The is Polymerized linseed oil, which is heated in an oxygen free environment thus making it thicker and decreasing trying time. Then there is Boiled Linseed Oil which has hardeners in it. In...

Yes. I'd imagine slathering it on there and leaving it wet would result in sticky misery. My intent is wipe on, immediately wipe away excess. Done.

Strat kit with a dash of neck twist

I received my replacement neck on Friday. First, checked with notched straight edge - nearly perfect - to the point it it would be crazy to complain. Light sanding then applied roughly 4 coats of tru-oil for a few days: about 12-15 passes. Trued the frets with 9-1/2” radius block, dressed and...

    Newb - HSS wiring questions

Thanks. The real complication comes in when I want to split the humbucker. To give you an idea of just how new I am to guitar pickups, today I desoldered the leads on the humbucker; that is the first time I have ever touched a soldering iron to anything guitar pickup related.

    Newb - HSS wiring questions

Actually, what I should do is just shutup and let you folks tell me what the best options are to get to my destination. Ultimately, it would be nice to have a tone option for any two pickups currently selected but, if that is foolish or unnecessarily complicated, no worried. I do not have a...

    Newb - HSS wiring questions

What is the difference between a North coil split and a South coil split? It about phase or just one being slightly closer to the bridge than the other, thus slightly different sound? What I meant is tone a tone control per pickup engaged; not statically assigned to each one. - neck/middle...

    Newb - HSS wiring questions

As usual, somebody (me) who does not fully comprehend how to do it is making it more complicated than need be. * I just checked, the push/pull I have is audio taper. If I fully comprehend. - push/pull is dedicated to humbucker. It selects single coil or humbucker depending on position. In...

    Newb - HSS wiring questions

Make sense? Considering I am a newb when it comes to guitar pickups, yes. I will de-solder the leads after work, check resistance, and identify which wires are for which poles and which is +/-. Basic desire: Ability to split the humbucker to single coil, when desired, to get closer to the...

    Newb - HSS wiring questions

I pealed back the heat shrink on the humbucker leads. Found, what I think is a green wire that was sent to ground with the bare wire.
